Theory of Pulsar Winds

چکیده
I discuss recent work on the nature of relativistic winds from Rotation Powered Pulsars, on the physics of how they transport energy from the central compact object to the surrrounding world, and how that energy gets converted into observable synchrotron emission.

The Stability of Wave-like Pulsar Winds
Pulsars are heavy, compact, rapidly rotating stars, surrounded by intense electric and magnetic fields. Plasma near the pulsar surface is accelerated away from the pulsar by the fields to form a pulsar wind. The accepted, steady-state pulsar wind model does not correctly predict the observed energy transport in the wind. The wind contains both an electromagnetic and a kinetic energy component. ...
متن کاملThe X-Ray Jet in the Crab Nebula: Radical Implications for Pulsar Theory?
The recent Chandra image of the Crab nebula shows a striking, axisymmetric polar jet. It is shown that jets are formed in axisymmetric, magnetized pulsar winds and that the jet luminosity scales relative to the total as (γ0σeq) , where σeq is the ratio of Poynting flux to particle kinetic energy output at the equator at the base of the flow and γ0 the initial Lorentz factor of the flow. The res...
متن کاملBinary Pulsar Shock Emissions as Galactic Gamma-ray Sources
We address several issues regarding the interpretation of galactic -ray sources. We consider powerful pulsars in binaries producing X-ray and gamma-ray unpulsed emission from the shock interaction of relativistic pulsar winds with circumbinary material. Nebular mass out ows from companion stars of binary pulsars can provide the right calorimeters to transform a fraction of the electromagnetic a...
متن کاملHigh Energy Studies of Pulsar Wind Nebulae
The extended nebulae formed as pulsar winds expand into their surroundings provide information about the composition of the winds, the injection history from the host pulsar, and the material into which the nebulae are expanding. Observations from across the electromagnetic spectrum provide constraints on the evolution of the nebulae, the density and composition of the surrounding ejecta, the g...
متن کاملRates of reconnection in pulsar winds
Using the formulation of relativistic reconnection by Lyutikov & Uzdensky (2002) we estimate the upper possible rates of reconnection in pulsar winds using Bohm prescription for resistivity. We find that the velocity of plasma inflow into the reconnection layer may be relativistic, of the order of the speed of light in the plasma rest-frame. This in principle may allow efficient dissipation of ...
